In an interview on tuesday, Ferriby’s new captain, danny Clarke reflected onboth his career and the coming season.
” As a kid i grew up just playing football. I then started playing Sunday League football in Hull and never really expected to play at a higher level. I was asked to play at Hall Road Rangers and jumped at the chance. It was a proper football gound with a stand, proper changing rooms and a fenc all round!
“When billy Heath asked me to go and play for him at frickley I jumped at the chance. Better grounds and a higher standard of football; what more could I want?
”When Billy took the job at Ferriby he asked me to go with him and accepting hisoffer was one I’ve certainly not regretted. It was a massive move and I’ve had an amazing time at Ferriby.
”The success in my time here has been amazing. We’ve won a league championship, had two second places in National League North and won the play-offs. plus there was that magnificent trip to wembley to win the FA Trophy.
You don’t really think things like that are possible on a miserable winter sunday in the Hull Sunday League!
“This season I’ve gor the resposibility of being club captain. It will help that I know a lot of peopleat and around the club. I think I’m the second oldest player at the club [and the longest serving player of the current squad].
“Steve [Housham, manager] and Darryn [Stamp, assistant manager] have come in and they’ve been brilliant. They know what is expected of them as a management team and they are putting their own style of football in place. They’ve brought in players to fit that style.
“My ambition this season is to win as many games as possible and enjoy the road. We’ve been underdogs every season that I’ve been at the club but that is something that has spurred us on.
“We start later in both the FA Cup and Trophy and given good draws we may be able to progress in both competitions. I’d certainly like in appearnce for myself andthe club in the first round of the FA Cup.
“However, our priority will be the National League. it will be a challenge but it is one we are all looking forward to. And I’m still not sure how I got from park football to here but I’ve loved every minute of it.”
